Why a quality fabric is worth its price

"Why does this fabric cost €39.95 per meter, while I also see fabrics online for €9.95?"

It is perhaps the most frequently asked question in our shop. A logical question, because in a photo, two fabrics can sometimes look surprisingly similar. The color is comparable, the print looks the same, and even the composition seems to match. Yet, you discover the real difference as soon as you feel the fabric, process it, and ultimately wear it.

A quality fabric starts with the basics: the fiber

Beautiful long cotton fibers, carefully selected flax for linen, fine wool, and high-quality silk form the basis for a fabric that is stronger, softer, and drapes more beautifully. The way a fabric is woven, dyed, and finished also determines how it behaves during sewing and how long a garment will stay beautiful.

The difference is often precisely in the details. A good fabric drapes more elegantly, wrinkles more beautifully, feels more pleasant on the skin, and retains its color and shape longer. You might not see it directly on a screen, but you'll notice it every time you put on the garment. That's precisely why experienced makers often consciously choose quality.

Those who make their own clothes invest much more than just money

You choose a pattern, carefully cut, pin, sew, and finish everything neatly. All those hours deserve a fabric that supports your craftsmanship. A beautiful dress or blazer is ultimately not only determined by the pattern, but especially by the fabric.

At 040 Design Fabrics, we therefore primarily work with exclusive deadstock designer fabrics from the European fashion industry. Unique qualities in linen, wool, silk, cotton, and high-quality blends with polyester and polyamide. Fabrics that were originally developed for high-quality fashion collections and are now given a second life. This way, you combine exclusivity with sustainability.

Does this mean that every fabric has to be expensive?

Certainly not. For a sample or a simple project, a basic fabric is often a perfectly fine choice. But if you're making a favorite dress, a perfectly fitting pair of trousers, or a coat you want to enjoy for years? Then investing in a quality fabric is often the smartest choice. Not because it's necessarily cheaper, but because it stays beautiful longer, wears more comfortably, and better showcases your work.

Our tip

Don't just compare fabrics by price per meter. Feel the fabric, look at its structure, let it glide through your hands, and see how it drapes. Often, within seconds, you'll understand why one fabric is a little more expensive than another. A beautiful fabric is not an expense, but the beginning of a garment you'll enjoy for years.

Finally

At 040 Design Fabrics, we believe that quality, sustainability, and creativity go hand in hand. That's why we are constantly looking for the most beautiful deadstock designer fabrics: exclusive qualities that would otherwise remain unused. Because a good garment starts with a good fabric – and you see and feel that investment, every single time.
